Travertine cleaning in Sydney

Travertine is soft, full of small holes and reacts to acid. We clean it with low pressure and pH-neutral products so the surface keeps its finish.

Travertine cleaning

What travertine cleaning with us looks like

Travertine is the stone of the modern prestige home: honed travertine around the pool, tumbled pavers down the side, cladding on a feature wall. It looks calm and expensive when it's clean and tired when it's not, and it marks easily.

Most damage to travertine comes from the wrong cleaner. Anything acidic, including many general-purpose outdoor cleaners and some mould removers, etches the surface and leaves dull patches. We use pH-neutral products, low pressure and a test patch every time. Limestone has its own page, because it's softer again.

Cleaning the terrace of a beachfront home on the Northern Beaches

Why it matters

What you get

No etching

pH-neutral cleaners only, so the honed or tumbled finish isn't burnt.

Filled holes stay filled

Low pressure keeps the resin or grout fill in travertine holes where it belongs.

Stains treated properly

Tannin, rust and oil each get a targeted treatment rather than more pressure.

Ready for sealing

A clean, dry surface so a penetrating sealer can do its job.

Our method

How we do it

Washing a hedge-lined front entry
Google review, Lou
Nathan is punctual, knowledgeable, polite and left our place neat and tidy.

Step 01 of 04

Test patch

We test the cleaner on a hidden spot and check the finish before doing the whole area.

Washing a tall rendered wall from a narrow side passage
Google review, Irish
He was professional, responsive, and delivered exactly as promised.

Step 02 of 04

Pre-treat

A pH-neutral cleaner sits on the stone to loosen dirt and organic growth.

Garden path and house exterior after a wash
Google review, Luke
Great work, fair pricing, and excellent communication.

Step 03 of 04

Low pressure clean

A surface cleaner at reduced pressure, with a wand for steps and edges.

Washing a painted boundary wall
Google review, Karen
Excellent service! Nathan is punctual and nothing is a problem.

Step 04 of 04

Rinse and check

A thorough rinse, then we check holes, joints and sealer condition.

Why sunscreen and pool water matter

Pool coping takes sunscreen, chlorine or salt water and wet feet every day. Sunscreen leaves greasy marks and salt crystals can form in the stone as it dries. Regular gentle cleaning and a good penetrating sealer stop both building up.

Call 0416 007 745
Can I use vinegar on travertine?

No. Vinegar is an acid and will etch travertine. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner.

Why is my travertine going dull?

Usually acid etching from cleaners or a worn topical sealer. We can tell you which on site.

Will pressure cleaning blow out the holes?

Not at the pressure we use. High pressure can, which is why we keep it low.

Should travertine be sealed?

Around pools and outdoor kitchens, yes, with a breathable penetrating sealer.

Can you remove leaf stains from travertine?

Tannin stains usually lift with a targeted treatment. Deep or old stains may fade rather than disappear.

How often should a travertine pool area be cleaned?

Once a year near the coast, or every 18 months in sheltered spots.
