Travertine cleaning on the North Shore
Travertine is soft, full of small holes and reacts to acid. We clean it with low pressure and pH-neutral products so the surface keeps its finish.

North Shore
Travertine cleaning on the North Shore
On the North Shore, travertine usually turns up in renovated rear terraces and pool areas behind older houses. Leaf litter from the canopy stains the open pores tan and green, and a gentle clean lifts it without opening the holes further.
Travertine is the stone of the modern prestige home: honed travertine around the pool, tumbled pavers down the side, cladding on a feature wall. It looks calm and expensive when it's clean and tired when it's not, and it marks easily.
Most damage to travertine comes from the wrong cleaner. Anything acidic, including many general-purpose outdoor cleaners and some mould removers, etches the surface and leaves dull patches. We use pH-neutral products, low pressure and a test patch every time. Limestone has its own page, because it's softer again.
Local detail
Travertine cleaning across the North Shore
What we see in suburbs on the North Shore:
- Longueville: Travertine terraces and pool surrounds.
- Gordon: Many homes have tennis courts, pools and sandstone garden walls.
- Castlecrag: The Griffin houses are built of local sandstone and designed to blend into the escarpment.
- Woolwich: Woolwich Dock and the river foreshore frame a suburb of sandstone cottages, Victorian homes and large waterfront houses, much of it in heritage conservation areas.
- Mosman: Down at the water, newer homes add limestone terraces, glass and large pool areas facing Middle Harbour.
- Northbridge: The castellated sandstone of the Northbridge suspension bridge sets the tone.
How often
For travertine cleaning, plan on near the water, every 12 months; under trees, every 12 months.
What affects the quote
- Heritage materials: test patches and lower pressure take longer than a modern build.
- Older materials: soft brick, original pointing and old paint mean gentler, slower methods.
- Waterfront: wash water near the shoreline may need to be contained and collected.

Talk to Nathan directly. He quotes and attends every job himself.
Do you offer travertine cleaning everywhere on the North Shore?
Yes. We cover all 17 suburbs listed above from our base in Elanora Heights.
Can I use vinegar on travertine?
No. Vinegar is an acid and will etch travertine. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner.
Why is my travertine going dull?
Usually acid etching from cleaners or a worn topical sealer. We can tell you which on site.
Will pressure cleaning blow out the holes?
Not at the pressure we use. High pressure can, which is why we keep it low.
Should travertine be sealed?
Around pools and outdoor kitchens, yes, with a breathable penetrating sealer.
Can you remove leaf stains from travertine?
Tannin stains usually lift with a targeted treatment. Deep or old stains may fade rather than disappear.
