What retaining wall cleaning with us looks like

Retaining walls hold back wet soil, so the back face is damp all the time. Water seeps through, carries salts and tannin to the front, and feeds mould and moss. On a sloping block they're often the biggest surface you see from the house.

We treat the growth, then clean the wall at the pressure its material can take: low for sandstone and render, firmer for block and brick in good condition. Weep holes are cleared so water can drain, and garden beds are protected.

Why retaining walls stain

Water moving through the soil behind the wall carries salts and tannin. When it reaches the face and dries, it leaves white efflorescence or brown streaks. Shade and constant damp then let moss and black mould take hold.

Cleaning removes what's on the face. Clear weep holes and good drainage behind the wall slow it coming back.

When a wall needs more than a clean

If a wall is leaning, bulging or cracking, cleaning won't fix it. We'll photograph anything we see so you can show a builder or engineer.

Can you clean a sandstone retaining wall?

Yes, at low pressure so the face of the stone isn't eroded.

What is the white powder on my retaining wall?

Usually efflorescence, salts carried out of the wall by water. It can be treated and cleaned off, but it returns if water keeps moving through.

Can timber sleepers be cleaned?

Yes, at low pressure so the timber doesn't fur up.

Will cleaning damage my plants?

We cover or rinse plants and direct run-off away from beds.

Do you clean the neighbour's side of the wall?

Only your side, unless the neighbour agrees.

Can a retaining wall be sealed?

Sandstone and block walls can be sealed with a breathable sealer to slow staining. We'll tell you if yours suits it.
